Country Folks Count

Country Folks Count

I had no initial knowledge in my life that one place was of more importance than another. I did not understand that being from a rural area in Alabama meant that somehow my lot was insignificant, overshadowed by the regal position of those that inhabited the city. Then, before a pee wee football game against the city kids, a local man came into the locker room and told us that our opponents put on their pants one leg at a time just like we did. I remember now thinking that it had never occurred to me that anyone would get dressed in any other manner. But the trouble with that day,and many days after that living in the sparsely populated area that I did, was that I bought into that way of thinking. I attended junior college at a place that most would consider small but was still filled with people that I thought better than me. I then moved to a four year school where I most certainly  was outmatched. I sold myself, and ultimately God, short because of my acceptance of the greatest untruth sold to country kids.  I came to believe that because of where I was from that somehow I was not good enough to excel in life. I often felt looked down on, which was true sometimes, but for the most part I had just perpetuated that lie through my own insecurities.

I assumed I would never return to that place where I learned to be insignificant however I am writing this now a few miles down the road from the place that I grew up. I have been fortunate enough to get to travel a little in the country and now I can’t imagine living anywhere else.  This is home. It is inhabited with special people, salt of the earth folks that get things done.   Looking back I can see the life wasted in inferior thought but know now that what I imagined was false. Hope exists in every place that God has created. So let me give some encouragement to you today. Wherever you reside and whatever you have done, there is a place for you in God’s plan. His love is unconditional and His path is for His glory which means that you are worthy, no matter how you put on your pants.
