Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Times of plenty can be deceiving.  We bask in the prosperity that we think was aquired on our own.  Sleep comes easy when all is well and we assume nothing will change. But then a Harvey or an Irma comes blowing through and our world is turned upside down.  It doesn’t have to be a hurricane that humbles us.  I have found that when things get hard in life I am brought back to this simple prayer. Give us this day our daily bread.Daily Bread

What does it mean to pray for food daily? Am I looking to the sky like the Hebrews waiting for manna? The Bible teaches us that we will work for our food so I don’t think that’s the answer.  Should I head to the store and buy my bread when I see disaster is pending? No, I don’t think the answer is at the grocery store but if it is then I’m probably in trouble because I never get there in time anyway. I think that the answer is twofold and has more to do with what God does than what we can do.

So if we should work then aren’t we really responsible for our daily bread? We are but not like we think sometimes. God is the giver of life. I believe that He has His hand on us at all times. We do not want that removed.  If I make a living it is because God has blessed me with the health to get up and go to work.  I think that the Lord’s prayer, that’s where I got the daily bread thing, is also telling us not to worry about where our next meal will come from.  If we maintain our relationship with God through faith and obedience, He will provide.  I don’t think that our daily bread stops at just the nourishment of our bodies.

When we learn to depend on God daily for all things He will bless us. It may not necessarily be a physical thing though.  Our spiritual life will grow in Him as we learn the practice of humility.  It is good to have a full belly but it is far better to have a satisfied soul.  I know first-hand that when I neglect the feeding of my inner man, through prayer and study, that everything else is out of order. That is why Jesus said that we should ask daily for our bread.  We must learn that we are dependent on Him to fulfill all our needs.Prayer

This is just my simple take on what we really need in life.  I, like you, have watched the destruction that the weather has brought to so many and my heart wept for them.  I am persuaded that the human spirit will prevail, with help from above, because that is how He made us.  I also know that heartache and destruction will come around again.  If you know me at all, I’m not a full time optimist.  Whatever this day brings keep one simple thought in your mind. Give us this day, Lord, our daily bread.
